Federal Employees Waste Millions on Travel

The Associated Press reported yesterday that federal employees wasted $146 million on travel expenses and first-class airline tickets. Most first class travel by federal employees is unauthorized or unjustified. According to the Government Accountability Office, the worst offenders were political appointees and senior bureaucrats who flew abroad, often at costs five to ten times the acceptable level simply because they felt entitled to do so.

With the serious fiscal challenges facing the federal government, agencies must maximize their ability to manage and safeguard valuable taxpayers' dollars," investigators wrote, suggesting agencies recoup the extra cost from those who abuse travel policies."
